On the way to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, to the west of Glasgow. We took a chartered bus for about an hour, then a ferry for half an hour.
I don't remember the boat swaying that much... but the railing looks fairly straight, so I don't think I'm just holding the camera wrong. Hmm.
Looking back at the mainland. Note the Scottish clouds.
Rothesay castle! It has a moat! A weirdly-shaped moat, but it's still the first moat I've seen!
Hey, it's a fleur de lis!... oops, no, it's the Saltire.
A pretty puny main gate, but I guess it qualifies. I don't think it had a drawbridge, though.
More weirdly shaped moat.
Those wouldn't help much against archers! ... oh wait, it's construction scaffolding, not battlements. My bad.
The invading force against the castle. Speaking of security, the barbed wire would probably do more to deter an enemy than the moat.
Well, if it isn't going to be useful, the moat might as well be pretty!
More crumbly castle.
The bottom-right sign says “The Serpentine Canada Hill 1M”. It took me a few hours to realize that “1M” meant “1 mile”. I knew it wasn't “1 metre”, but I wondered if they'd forgotten the “k” in “km” or something like that.
Hmm, this didn't work. It's a fairly steep windy path. Cars drive up and down the way my parents ski -- mostly going horizontally across the slope. I ski by going down, of course.
You get more of a sense of the slope here.
Top of the windy slope (BTW, that's the “twisty” kind of “windy”, not the “airy” type of “windy”), looking towards the mainland.

Canada Hill. Apparently in the 50s, you could immigrate to Canada for 10 pounds or so, and this is where the remaining family members would go to wave the immigrants away.
View from Canada Hill.
More view from Canada hill. And yes, this is a golf course. We exercised our Right to Roam to wander through the course.
We took a bus tour of the island; I think this is looking at the mainland (on the right) and some other islands (left).
Take a moment here -- I'm on top of an open-air double-decked bus, looking down at the beach. Note the clear water... is the Atlantic cleaner than the Pacific? I really don't remember the beach of Vancouver, Victoria, or Singapore being this clear.
More clear ocean water.
Sheeps. I hear them go “baaa”.
Cows. I didn't hear them go “mooo”.
Can you feel the love^H^H^H^H^H excitement tonight?!
That's “Queer lake” in the back. More sheeps going “baa” in the middle.
More clear ocean water from a double-decker bus.
Rothesay beach, looking towards mainland.

Back on the mainland, rocky beach. Ferry terminal is behind me.
