Somers Point Beach, Tennis Courts runs from Bay Ave in, The opposite of what I remember. The Beach retaining Bulkhead is still in good shape in this photo.
Floats in front of the City pier. Also the Diving board on the Floats
The City held swimming races from the floats to the bulkhead and back every year, they had a platform at the bulkhead at water level. I swam it many times and never lost a race, I wouldn't want to try it today. the prizes were War Bonds & War Stamps. Bill Car

I wonder if bill knows the guy in the picture is Tommy Neal', A LITTLE STORY: In 1943 I was at the aviation training center in Jacksonville Fla. we where in our bunks, ready to go to sleep the other guys use to kid me about being the hick from summers corners [Somers Point] a guy from two bunks from me said I'm from a town in NJ called Somers Point, where is summers corners??? that guy was Tommy Neal, that's how I first met him, and we became friends, we got separated because he got sick and had to go to sick bay for a week or so and we where sent to different ships. that was Over 60 years ago... I believe his mother was a school teacher, he was a great swimmer, the Navy used him to instruct others in our group. I would guess this picture was taken in the 1940s. Harvey . Soda Pop in the background, Check out the old outhouses on the beach to the left. Tom is on the right side.

Jesse Hand's Bar. New Jersey Ave. in the rear of the Mathias Building, across the street is Geretys Market. The bar was know as "Jesse's". Charley Thomas purchased this bar and moved it across the street to where Geretys was then.

There are a lot of uniformed men in this bunch of photos, I believe that they are the Army or national guard that had there barracks upstairs in Conovers store during the war. They were here to guard the beaches and bridges.
