Unveiling of Traian Popovici memorial plaque
On April 21, 2009, there took place in Chernivtsi Ukraine, the unveiling of a memorial plaque to Traian Popovici,
who in 1941, as nominated mayor of the city, did his utmost to prevent the deportation to Transnistria, of the total Jewish population of the city. For his humanitarian, brave actions, in the face of the genocide planned by his government, he is honored by the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, as "Righteous among the nations". This memorial was initiated by some of those who survived WW2 thanks to the decency of this one man.
Traian Popovici is remembered with eternal gratitude and in the hope that he will serve as an example
to all humanity.
