Long Island City Dec 2012
When you drive the LIE to the midtown tunnel (as millions do!), off to the right you see this old power plant behind an old cemetery, a very disturbing juxtaposition. I finally got off the highway and decided to take a look. In actuality, the area is in Maspeth, Queens. This is the the over-century old Mount Zion Jewish cemetery, and behind it a similarly old Sanitation dept. facility. Under a cold, dull grey sky, they seem very strange. If you drive a little father on the LIE into Greenpoint/Long Island City, you come to a newer Sanitation facility along the Newtown creek. After that, you reach the banks of the East River, which has a newly developed shore front, in front of big new condo buildings, under the old Pepsi sign (which is what you see from the other side of the river in UN park).
