Lap one we noticed a snake with an enflated toad it was attempting to swallow
The toad looked so huge we didn't think it would ever get it down, so we made sure to look for it on the next lap
The dogs cool off halfway around lap two
Getting a bit of a drink
On the second lap, the toad was up to its armpits in snake
It was a sad scene. Natures way is slow and arduous, as the toad was still blinking and breathing, despite being quite obviously masticated from the shoulders down.
The eyes say it all. Notice the long mass of toad in the snake's gullet. Ugh.
In this view you can really see how the snake's jaw dislocates completely to swallow such a large prey.
Another view of the snakes jaw. It appears that he coats the toad with copious amounts of saliva to ease the passage down the gullet.
An ant is drawn to the juices. A food chain reversed
Eye of toad, thorax of ant
Snake:This is UN comfortable
Toad: Dude. Tell me about it.
Toad arms seem to embrace the snake's head
One final view. I only wish it was over more quickly. Snakes have to eat too, though.
The dogs aren't sure what to think about the snake/toad combination. In general, they are very wary of both snakes and toads.
