Starting the 3-day, 20-mile journey on the Mt. Rogers trail
And Chetchu is leading the way...of course
It didn't take long to find the evergreens
And the snow!
I thought this view was amazing...until later in the day
On the AT - White Blazes!
I have never seen something as beautiful or serene as this. Amazing!
The views went on forever
The best part was there wasn't a soul anywhere - total solitude.
The vegetation and landscape was constantly changing
Our first sight of the wild ponies!
On our way to the summit of Mt. Rogers - the snow was deep!
Here we are at the highest point in Virginia - 5,729 feet!
I never knew these shelters existed on the AT. It even had a loft!
However, I stubbornly and rather naively decided to pop a tent, only to be awoken by sub-freezing temperatures and howling winds that night.
What a great hiking companion!
Chetchu and a cute little pony in a staring contest...
The pony won...
The view from our campsite - breathtaking.
I let Chetchu wear my coat - it was freezing! Eventually, we even shared the sleeping bag.
We awoke the next morning to the ponies invading our space. Chetchu was not very pleased...
Day 2 - and the views went on and on
A former weigh station called Scales
At this point we were both pretty wiped out
Night 2 - near the Old Orchard Shelter
Chetchu's new doggie bed
Ready to begin the final leg back to the car. What an amazing journey!
