RIVERSIDE/GOVERNOR ST GANG, 1950s. JACK KIRTLEY'S PHOTOS
Lest the current generation jump to conclusions, we were not a "Gang" in the sense of today's world. We were a "Gang" in the sense of "Our Gang" or "The Little Rascals" of the old time movies. We didn't even think of ourselves as a group - we just happened to have a place, Van Bibber Brothers Service Station, to work on our cars, congregate, etc. The only "Gang" we had heard about was the Rosedale Gang in the Division St. area. Supposedly they were a mean bunch who really were a Gang. Jack Kirtley, Ralph O'Nan, and I learned that at least some of them were more bluff than bite one night in the Fall of 1950 when three black leather jacket Rosedale guys physically intimidated us. But we found they were all bluff when I took a swing at one of them, missed, and they backed off. They followed us to the Service Station where some of "Our Gang" were and they became very friendly.
