As we leave our house, we follow forest rd 10 up the hill and towards Cerro Pelado.
This is our fire station about a mile from our house.
Deb warming up by walking up FR 10
We're now on the road to Cerro Pelado. Mostly dirt roads until we get up near the summit, then mostly elk trails.
Those markings on the tree to the left signify an archeological location, most likely an Indian Ruin.
Getting up around 9000' now, our house is at 8100'
Roads are rutted from ATV use...
This one wasn't too bad, but notice they are all uphill.
First sign of snow, up around 9500'
One of my favorite spots up high
An old log cabin, most likely from the 1800's.
I wonder who they were and how long they lived here.
Another shot, look at the size of those timbers.
Heading down towards the road to Cerro Pelado
This was our final approach to the summit. There is a road to the top, but we like to follow elk trails.
We're now on the top of Cerro Pelado, 10,117', that's Redondo Peak.
Looking down towards Jemez Springs
The fire tower on Cerro Pelado
Looking down at the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque (faded in far background)
First glimpse of the Valle Grande towards Los Alamos
Deb looking for the trail down off the mountain, we have a trail down that Nate McDowell showed us back in 2006.
That's the road coming up the mountain
Got to slide under that to get to the trail, that Deb is already going down on.
Following the fence-line down
Many blowdowns to get over
Big tree down
In front of the big tree
I could have sat inside that, it was so big.
Deb plowing on ahead
Is this Barkley?
I found a better trail on the other side of the fence (Elk/cattle trail) and Deb came back to join me.
Smooth sailing now down the animal trail
The jeep road at the base
Right down the middle of this to get over to Peralta Ridge in the distance.
Nice animal trail to follow
Looking to my right....sheer wilderness.
Deb continuing on...towards the Peralta Ridge. We've been up over 9500' now for a couple of hours...good altitude training!
A nice road we found up to Peralta
Looking south to my left
It was a nice old logging road
Redondo from the west side of the Peralta Ridge
Again looking west towards the south. The road we'll be taking down later on is on the side of Los Griegos, that 10,000 footer to the left.
Taking a break up on one of the high points on Peralta Ridge (9800')
Time to head down...
Some nice high peaks in the distance...that's Chicoma (11K) to the far right with Caballo Peak (10K) somewhere in there.
Deb wanted to take a picture of me running down the hill
Deb running down ahead of me on a nice road.
Better view of Valle Grande, which is a volcanic crater from many moons ago, now a playground for Elk.
Nearing our compound, an old log cabin in Bootzin's field
Leaving the trails and entering our association.
The "trail" up to our house from FR 10.
...and there's our house!
