Route today was starting at Rte 126, go up FR 376 past San Antonio Hot Springs into the Valles Caldera for about 11 miles and back. I was planning on going further by running a loop I had mapped out, but it went into the VCNP meadow and I saw vehicles in there. It is not allowed to enter the preserve without paying money! So total distance for today was around 21 miles.
On my way out, I see some mist in the trees...yes, it's raining.
Looking at the other side of 11K high Redondo, I'll be on the other side of it tomorrow.
Purty in here....we're now just past the hot springs, that's San Antonio creek
Another shot further up...green, ey? We've been getting a lot of rain recently and it's greened things up nicely.
If you got close to the river, you'd see it s a little black from the runoff from the fire further east.
Looking out into the Valles Caldera, where we're about to enter illegally
Everything was fenced off but this cattle guard, so we crossed and ventured forth for a few miles.
I HAD to follow my GPS coordinates, right?
The Valles Caldera National Preserve, a beautiful masterpiece. It's a shame it's closed to hikers.
On we go...our once nice runnable road has become this...which I liked better!
Weather moving in...the monsoons have been pretty steady the last few days.
Views were everywhere
We're on our way back now because the GPS coordinates had me going into the VCNP large meadow and I just didn't feel right going in there, so we turned around.
The river with some fancy rock formations along the road, we're still several miles north of the hot springs
Huge tent rocks on either side
A cool bat cave up above
Some cliffs ahead
Back to the creek, so must be getting close to the hot springs
It was a busy day, but's really raining hard now, so people are leaving.
Vehicles everywhere....I liked it better further north!
Almost back to the truck now...that's LaCueva down below. The baptist church is to the left of center and Rte 126 is lower right.
Dogs are wet and tired.
Our 23 miler became a 21 miler because I didn't do the loop into the meadow part...it was just an out and back.
Marley getting herself comfy in her corner.
They are wet from the rain and a couple of episodes. One was chasing cattle and another was chasing a herd of Elk in the VCNP. Got to find a way to break them of that habit.
Marley's all comfy now... tomorrow is another 15 miles up higher, guys, so rest up!
