Parked the 50mpg Golf in the 2nd spot I found
Salida "S" hill we'll be running down later on...
Mountains surrounding Salida
An awesome little town
Gathering at the start at 9am, it's already warming up.
More runners gathering. This is a 2 mile run, a half marathon and a full marathon, we all start together
Deb and Sean Cunnif, a friend from ABQ
Collegiate Peaks, that we will view all day long
...and we're off!
I took it easy in the beginning because I'm still not acclimatized, having only lived back West for 8 weeks from NH.
A good runnable road for most of the way out
Mountains are beginning to show themselves
Entering the San Isabel National Forest
Aid station #1, mile 3.5 miles
Hunter from Los Alamos just passed me (in the red)
Awesome views, awesome race
Yes, Collegiate Peaks.
Deb and I may be running the Collegiate Peaks 50 in May
Hitting the trail up to 10+ miles
A friend I made from Steamboat Springs...we shared the trail a lot today.
Runners coming back from the turnaround at mile 10
Nice view....I'm talking about the mountains!
Aid at mile 10.6, the turnaround
Some nice runnable downhill
Did get gnarly at times...
Some runners coming up the hill while I run down
Deb reached the trail section as I was leaving it.
Only in the West...gotta love it!
Left the road and took a left onto a nice jeep road at mile 13
This was such a fine race in fine country!
The shady, snowy section....it was still quite runnable
Loved this whole section, a mixture of mountains and desert
Somewhere around the corner I did my Superman trick and scraped up my hands, arms and knees.
I look like the mummy today all wrapped up.
The section was particularly fast!
On the hunt for Hunter...this was his first marathon and he did well.
More nice views
Hunter wanted to take my picture with the nice backdrop
We're still probably 8 miles from the finish
Maybe this is where i took the dive...
It was a fun trail
Some sandy sections
This is where the trail wound around and back and forth.
You can see it cutting across the hill ahead.
Li'l Rattler up ahead!
Final aid station, less than 3 miles to go!
Time to start really cranking...
Salida and the trail
I'm done now....these are the Los Alamos runners, most of who finished an hour ahead of me.
Deb finishes and is first over 50!
The day after we went on a 2 hour hike in our backyard. This is my arm and hand after playing superman during the race.
