The new courthouse will feature 31 courtrooms, will provide increased security in the transport and holding of in-custody criminal defendants and will correct the functional deficiencies of the current building.
(April 7, 2011) Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye participates in a ceremony to mark the start of construction for the new courthouse in Long Beach.
The new building will be named in honor of former Governor George Deukmejian (pictured left and joined by Presiding Judge Lee Smalley Edmon and Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye).
A model of the future Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse was on display.
More than 200 people attended the ceremonial groundbreaking event.
The new courthouse site is located at Magnolia Avenue and Third Street in downtown Long Beach and is scheduled to open in late 2013.
