First swimming hole along the way,
Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska. From left: Zana, Em, Kiche, Jake.
The water level was quite high, trees were under water.
Zana loves playing in the water too.
Jake & our trusty rig: the flamin' Maia (notice bullet hole :) with the Happy Camper. We all took turns driving which worked out really well & gave us each lots of experience backing the trailer.
somewhere in Nebraska
Prairie Rose State Park, Iowa. Thankfully it
didn't start raining until after we made camp. Being desert rats, we love rain!
Our beloved Civil Engineer is fascinated with bridges, dams, spillways, old buildings, retaining walls... you get the picture.
Too wet & cool to go swimming in Iowa, but we got another kind of gift - a doe & fawn out enjoying the rain with us..
That little white spot across the lake is our home away from home, the Happy Camper :)
Dave showed us around his office at UW Madison.
He told us about the fiber optics, routers, and connections that make up this not-so-little neighborhood of the internet.
Lake Kegonsa near Madison was nice except for two things: There was a blue-green algae alert (especially toxic to dogs), and there were TONS of mosquitoes. And I do mean TONS. That's Jake basking on the pier.
This is the pet swimming area at Lake Kegonsa. A pleasant breeze helped keep the bugs away.
Em's preferred method of pest repellent.
Michael's Frozen Custard! Oh so tasty... They even had dog treats which Kiche and Zana snarfed.
hangin' out at the custard shop... love that grin, Dave!
Em, Danielle, Dave & Eric.
Jennie showed us around State Street in Mad-town. It was fun playing tourist in my old home state...
Jake, cousin Jennie & her friend Steph.
hmmm... is that the bird???
looks like they're singing the same tune
The state capitol of Wisconsin.
After a "Hobo" dinner (beef & buffalo patties, potatoes, veggies, & green chile roasted in foil packets on charcoal) we had a good time chatting about scary movies and how to recycle old buildings.
Jennie, Steph, Jake, Danielle, & Em's arms :).
Dave is a 21st century kinda' guy, cleaning up after dinner.
We toured WORT, the all-volunteer radio station that Dave & Danielle helped to form some 30 years ago. Dave was hosting a call-in program about the Google/Verizon controversy.
Em at WORT.
She thought the show was riveting.
After bopping all over the midwest, we found a fine swimming hole in eastern New Mexico - Ute Lake. Water seemed pretty high here too.
Puppies didn't have to swim at a designated beach :)
Zana the wonder dog.
I almost caught him slipping in...
Check out that biker tan ... and tatoo!?!? Eeek.
