We made a huge mistake at going to Shanghai South Train Station to take the train to SuZhou, ended up had to refund our tickets and take half hour taxi to Shanghai main terminal, I must say though, South Station is very interesting looking
Taking high speed rail 和諧號, it only took nearly 50 minutes to arrive at Suzhou, man.. 38 Degrees and filled with people!!!
This train reaches 200km/hr
We ended up joined a local tour company just outside of the train station, 130RMB each, our first destination was 耦園 (Couple's garden), a 4 acre building complex that was built as a retreat for a wealthy couple
The first reception hall after the entrance is for normal visitors
this is the VIP room, where the owner of would greet the guests personally
Gardening landscapes is one of the hallmark of SuZhou 園林
In the garden, rocks and ponds are always present
The exit of this garden is by boat
The tour guide told us that if we clap hard enough, the ferrying old lady will sing for us.. and she did! The tone were soft and very beautiful
Ferrying boat, in SuZhou, many of the houses have its back against the river, water transportations were a very important aspect of people's life
Our next destination were 封(楓)橋, where 張繼 wrote one of the most famous poem in China
I didn't have any feel at all while in this place. Mainly this place were constructed in recent years and a tourist destination.. looks old, but not really
楓橋 in my back
The 3rd destination was the tour around the SuZhou's old city via its canals, this shot was taken when we passed through the older section of the canal, as you can see, majority of the housing have stairs in the back allowing quick access to water transports
Really liked the motion blur on this shot, they are water cleaners keeping the rivers clean
Local “fisherman” are fishing using fishing nets
people having fun in water
Sells the waterwheel!!
We arrived at 報恩寺, where the tallest building (報恩塔) is in the old section of the city
The lions statues here led me blieve this designs were under foriegn influence.. puting the lions aside, the curl hairs and big mastaches all around the cheek were trademark of foriegners back in paints and drawings in previous dyansties
The tower were 9 levels tall, which differs from the standard Buddhism 7 levels design
This is again Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, however, if you zoom in closely to see the Bodhisattva's facial features, you will again notice the impression of foriegn design.. I wonder what the story was behind this..
Old plque dated back to 梁皇
OK... this is probablly the most ridculous offering I've seen yet (and horrible way for temple to earn donations) ... LOOK at THAT incense!!! it's 2 meters LONG!! it's feels more like a 金箍棒 then an incense... gosh
LOOK at that!!! What?! You think your wish will come true (no offense) when you buy a bigger incense stick?
A view of old SuZhou district, the black roof and white walls were the trademark of this area's design.
Cant help but look down to the temple and seeing those huge sticks...
After the end of the tour, we asked them to drop us off at the old district, we booked our train back to Shanghai @ 9pm
