Dark cloudy skies...
... as we launch from Pier 40 in Manhattan
... and paddle down the Hudson
The One World Trade Center tower rises ever higher
Looking back at Manhattan
... on a leisurely cruise through the harbor
For a moment, the sun lights up the green water and the broad panorama of the harbor
We paddle south along the Bay Ridge Flats ...
... and under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge ...
... out into the Lower Bay
Round Norton Point
Dark clouds over Coney Island
We try to land under Coney Island's parachute jump, but are chased off by lifeguards
So we paddle back round Norton Point ...
... and into Coney Island Creek
In the Creek, we land on the beach ...
... for a late lunch
After lunch, we inspect the Yellow Submarine of Brooklyn
Not so yellow any more ...
... but still impressive
Rusted and barnacle-encrusted
The poor bird is confused
"Leave me alone!"
We paddle back across Gravesend Bay ...
... toward the Narrows
View across Raritan Bay to the west
Almost at the bridge ...
... then under it ...
... into the Upper Bay
Owl's Head Pier
View to the west
Patches of blue sky and yellow sunlit cloud
We paddle back through the Bay Ridge anchorage
Statue of Liberty
A sinister cloud ...
... hangs over Manhattan
Manhattan and Brooklyn, light and dark
We reach Governors Island
Photo-op at the green buoy
We paddle with traffic toward the Battery
It gets very dark
The rain begins
But just then the sun comes out through a gap in the clouds
We dodge ferries
The sunlight through the rain ...
... turns all to gold
Manhattan, blue and gold
The water is like beaten copper
The rain slackens
Behind, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island become visible again
We paddle up the Hudson
A few last flaming clouds ...
... as the sun finally sets
Back at Pier 40 in the dusk ...
... as the city lights come on
