Patong Beach, Phuket Island, just off the west coast of southern Thailand. Buildings along the beachfront were badly damaged in the December 26, 2004 tsunami. The PBS Nova documentary 'Wave that shook the world' contains some video clips of the wave crashing ashore here. (Unless otherwise indicated, I took the photographs of Phuket Island in March 2005.)

Phi Phi Island, near Phuket. The low lying part of the island is densely packed with stores, hotels, and backpacker hostels. It was devastated by the tsunami.
By the time I took this photograph on Phi Phi island in March 2005, much of the rubble of the buildings that once stood here had been cleared away.

Kalutara, Sri Lanka. A memorial to those who died on the world's worst train accident. Up to 1,500 people are believed to have been on the train, which was traveling between the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo and the city of Galle at the southwestern tip of the island when it was struck by the December 2006 tsunami. (I took these photographs of Sri Lanka in January 2008.)

Dujiangyang, in China's Sichuan Province. This town of 60,000 people is located 50km southeast of the epicenter of the earthquake that struck Sichuan Province in May 2008. More than 70,000 people died in the quake. I visited in the area and took these photographs in August 2008.
