Sketching in the pencil lines and titles took about 2 hours. Then the first things to ink are the borders and compass.
Closeup of penciled-in heraldry.
Some roads and landscape features.
Filled in some trees and titles. I like to do the more illustrative titles first.
Closeup of the fighting fields with the scale of feet below it.
Merchants row and tournament area added, and a first ink pass over some titles and buildings on the map bottom. I ink things anywhere from two to five times; first a sketch with a fine pen, then more details with a medium pen, then a bold outline with a thick pen.
Border details, and one of the pens I use.
Close-up of border.
Starting to look good, but there is still much to do...
Illustrative titles on the right side of the map.
Closeup of the entrance, with some buildings and tents.
Closeup of the town hall and merchant area. That is not a stinky crown, it is a firepit. :)
The main title. The lines with XXX's through them are barbed wire.
Starting the heraldry.
Trees and more trees.
Pencil mostly erased. Pretty much done, but after this I *did* scan it and clean up a few things in photoshop. Total drawing time with pencil sketch: about 16 hours.
