2012 FHWA "Highways for Life" Workshop, Westlake, TX
The Federal Highway Administration and TxDOT hosted an innovation showcase in Westlake, TX on May 1, 2012, that highlighted five cutting-edge technologies being demonstrated on the construction of FM 1938, as part of FHWA's Highways for Life program.
The Cement Council of Texas helped sponsor the event, which attracted over 85 attendees from TxDOT, several Texas cities, and several other State DOTs.
The showcase included presentations from experts discussing the five technologies: 1) Optimized aggregate gradation , 2) Intelligent compaction, 3) Non-Woven geotextile bond breakers, 4) Improved concrete curing, 5) Improved texturing and grooving.
The attendees were bussed to the project in the afternoon for a site tour that included concrete placement using optimized aggregates, texturing, and curing with a lithium compound. The tour also included a stop at the concrete batch plant.
