Land of the Lisu: Nu Jiang to Kachin State
In the Summer of 2013 I took another trip to the Nu Jiang region of Yunnan province in China. This time my goal was to follow the old trade route of the Lisu people in Kachin State, Burma. Due to the remoteness of the valleys on the Kachin State side, the Lisu have to obtain practically everything, down to the simple most necessities, on the Chinese side. They take a climb of about 1800 meters on the Kachin State side of the Gaoligong mountains and take a similar descend down the Nu Jiang side to the market town of Fugong . They make the return trip carrying packs weighing up to 30 KG.
