Super8 super luxury! Getting everything ready.
At the start. Just before dawn.
Let the fun begin. Sweet rolling single-track.
I look tired, but I felt great at this point. I need to practice the skill of self-portrait while running.
This course is beautiful.
Warm Springs aid-station.
I think these people are following me.
20 mile aid station had quesadillas!
Lake-side single track was plentiful.
I brought my girls with me.
This tree is cool. About 27 miles.
My feet love single track.
Hammered from 33-38 miles with Meredith Terrranova. Until...
After crossing a cold stream I suddenly feel terrible.
My legs suddenly die, my face goes numb, and Meredith leaves me in the dust. My 9 hour finish is slipping away.
Sitting at Warm Springs Aid. I spent 20 minutes sitting here thinking I was going to die. Numb and pulsing face, hands, and arms. Slurred speech. Racing heart.
I start to feel better, but I was sufficiently freaked out. I decide to drop because I have no idea what had happened and the final 10 miles are pretty remote.
Back at the Start/Finish.
I feel perfectly fine now with fresh legs and plenty of regret. My first DNF and it had nothing to do with training or tenacity. But, I really thought I was going to die. I think I know what happened now. Lesson learned.
This is when I should have finished.
View from the start is beautiful.
