Gibraltar Strait Swim, Oct. 9th, 2012, Vasanti Niemz, times are UTC (start was at 8:20 local time)
Albena en route to the harbour
far too much stuff for only 14 km!
or shall we take the ferry?
dawn is breaking in the east
dedicating the swim to the World Harmony Run
with Rafael Gutiérrez Mesa, President of ACNEG
Columba II is taking the swimmer - captain is Christina (her father Antonio owns Columba I)
followed by the smaller craft with my helper Albena and pilot Fernando, who has swum the Strait 5 times, fast!
getting ready to go - in spite of the mist, the decision was made to give it a try
heading to Tarifa Island for the start
the swells at the rocks were quite strong
so they asked me to start away from the rocks
off we go - lots of fish under me in the water
swimming into the dawn
the mist is clearing, luckily
the sea - so calm!
close encounters - but no danger, thanks to modern technology
200 ships per day are travelling through the Gibraltar Strait
second busiest waterway (after the English Channel)
thanks to the efforts of FIRMM, the ships travel quite slowly
- so the injury rate of whales and dolphins have decreased in the last few years, we were told
a magic day - for swimmer and crew
in the "separation zone"
swimming into infinity
the steel "giraffes" of Tanger-Med container port on the right in the distance
Cetacea - or human?
feeding time - almost touched the boat...
the water is far clearer than in the English Channel
sea of light
last gulps of hot ginger (or Bengal Spice) tea with maxim
thank you - see you in half an hour with a piece of banana please!
only 2 km more to go (or less)
but the current is picking up
flying fish, Albena said
or diving fish?
very strange shape, anyway
Perejil island, where we did NOT land
taking the detour to Marsa point to the right
happy and grateful
we did it!
Albena also had a good time!
Spanish and Moroccon flag on the boat, World Harmony Run torch to top the swim off (I had a banner made, but a neighbour accepted the parcel at home and went away...)
speeding back home
Fernando - 5 times Gibraltar Strait swimmer!
Jebel Musa - mythical mountain
feeding time again
yeah, someone really had a good time!
no need even to change out of the swim suit
Christina, the pilot of the guide boat
Tarifa Island, from where we started
Blessings at the harbour entry
with pilot Christina
with Rafael, president of ACNEG
