After camping at the Lower Hondo CG along the road up to Taos Ski Valley, we hit the trail around 7:30am
We ran when we could but that wasn't much on the way up
A short bit of alternate singletrack on the way to Bull of the Woods
The Bull of the Woods yurt. I stayed there many years ago with Erik and Mark V. for some fun skiing
The way is well signed
Local residents seemed indifferent to our presence
Sweet day and sweet singletrack. And still some snow over there on Lake Fork Peak
What's up, Mr. Marmot?
Instead of dropping into La Cal Basin on our ascent, we stayed high on the more westerly ridge
A bighorn sheep hunter with his two mules across the way on the standard trail
Wide open spaces
Skirting a false summit along the ridge with Taos Ski Valley in the background
Horseshoe Lake. I've backpacked there many. many years ago with Julian
Pretty crowded summit for a Wednesday
This was Allison's first time on the summit of Wheeler Peak. At 13,161', it's the highest point in NM. This was around my tenth time up there.
Happy folks on a beautiful day
Allison crusing on the descent. We were able to run most of the way down.
We stuck to the standard trail through La Cal Basin because it was more runnable
Running hard on the return
Back at the start for a 5.5 hour outing of about 15 miles and 4,500' vertical feet of climbing. Solid!
