It was a mandatory skin wax day so all three sets got the full treatment. We parked just above the entry point for the Kachina lift.
We were surprised to encounter only a few short portage spots. Otherwise we were able to skin up from the car and ride back later.
Amy scopes out the basin. A nice amount of snow still. It heated up fast, though.
Our goal for the day was some turns on "Sin Nombre" (12,819'). We've skied the chutes in the center of the photo before but base on the early softening of the snow this day we opted for the slope in the right of this photo
Amy was rocking it for being 30 weeks pregnant
Some shade was a nice respite from the sun
Heading directly towards our slope
We were able to skin up to about 12,000' but it was tricky with a soft surface layer on top of a firm lower layer a few inches down. So we soon switched to booting up.
Wheeler is a bit dry
What an awesome day! We sat on the ridge at about 12,500' for quite a while with no wind. Just one of those days that makes one feel very glad to be alive and in the mountains
Scott's skis frame Vallecito Mountain (12,643')
Time for the spoils! Ladies first, of course.
The turns were quite good. A nice buttery surface on top of a firm layer underneath
Mega cornices over near Lake Fork Peak
One last look back at our lines
The ski out was better than expected. Plenty of really sticky snow but it went well.
And back at the vehicle at 12:30pm. A 4.5 hour outing with 2,500' of climbing on a gorgeous day. Awesome.
