Starting from a pullout along the highway at 5:30am. It was in the upper 20s but calm air.
We read about a fourth class shortcut up to the base of Eagle Wall and gave it a go. This worked out great.
IBM Boulder marks the top of the fourth class shortcut
Sunrise on Eagle Wall. Just above here we saw two Bighorn sheep cruising along the slabs. Awesome.
Close up of Eagle Wall. Levitation 29 goes up the face left of center up the obvious, steep crack in the upper face
More sunrise action
Cool patina plates in nice ight
Sunny and warm on the south faces, snowy and cold on the north faces
Looking up the route from the base
I led the first pitch, a short 5.10b pitch with a few bolts but requiring gear as well
Daniel heading up the 5.11a second pitch.
The route goes up through those roofs for the crux. Steep and strenuous
Above the roofs and near the belay
Looking down the really fun 5.8 third pitch
Daniel heads up the 5.10a fourth pitch. Mostly face climbing cruxes with crack to start and finish the pitch.
Looking down the fifth pitch--starting to get up high and feel the exposure.
The fifth pitch is a 5.11c steep (very well-bolted) crack
Pinching hard is the name of the game
Looking down the seventh pitch. 5.11a crumbly rock slabbing. I enjoyed it.
Daniel leading up the eighth pitch, 5.10a. We felt the crux was leaving the belay. I was impressed when Daniel went for it and said, “sorry if I fall on you” as he commited to the moves. He did not fall.
Looking down the last real pitch, pitch 9. Sandy, poor rock with some awkward 5.9 moves.
We topped out of the wall at 2:00pm. Cool weather but with the sun on the wall all day it was great for climbing.
Looking east on top of Eagle Wall
We went for the walk off because it's supposed to be really nice. We enjoyed it but found the ice and snow on the north-facing aspects to be a bit of a bother
Mount Wilson with the snow on it
Negotiating snow and ice on the descent
I've never heard anyone talk of the ice climbing in Red Rock Canyon--could be good. :-)
Back on the south-facing slope heading back down into upper Oak Creek Canyon
Don't step in the water, it might be ice!
Heavy duty ice but it looked cool
Down lower where it hasn't froze
Lots of beautiful pools in the canyon
Following cairns back to the car
The lights of Las Vegas
And back at the parking area at 5:30pm. Exactly a twelve hour day car to car. Awesome.
