Hunter getting psyched for the Kitchen Mesa hike. Kitchen Mesa was our first hike of the day. At ~5 miles round trip and 600 feet of climbing, it was casual.
We didn't have golf carts nor did we sign in
Signage was adequate
Andy crossing the frozen stream in the morning. It wasn't as frozen on our return but we crossed back without issue.
It didn't take long before we were in color country
The crux of the hike was going up here through a short bit of third class gully to access the top of the mesa
Fast, scenic cruising on top of Kitchen Mesa
It looked a bit like a moonscape in some parts. There are trees on the moon, right?
Abiquiu Lake makes for a fine backdrop for their discussion on choosing to wear a dark shirt with tan pants today.
Chimney Rock across the valley. We'd hike out there in the afternoon.
"Rocks" is a generous term for "barely consolidated dirt"
A tiny slot canyon to pour off
The crew descending the short third class gully
Nova got some assistance down
The crack on the left looked decent. The rock is damn soft, though.
After returning to the cars we headed over to the Chimney Rock trail. See? It was a 3 mile round trip hike.
Chimney Rock. The formation down and left is called the Camel Toe, for obvious reason

Looking back at Kitchen Mesa from the Chimney Rock trail
You can see clean through Chimney Rock (a.k.a. Ghost Tower)
Closer up of Chimney Rock from the mesa just north of it
Fuck You BP or Facebook Up? I wasn't sure.
