Orvieto Etruscan Well. Dozens of such wells were dug by Etruscans so that they could climb down (using the side holes) to get water. They must have been quite petite and very fit. Each well shaft is exactly the same dimensions and only about 18inches wide.
Orvieto Underground, Originally started by the Etruscans as long ago as 5000 years ago, the soft rock (compressed volcanic ash) was excavated beneath properties to give land owners more space.
Tivoli Garden Fountains. Cardinal d'Este built himself this pile as he waited to be chosen for the next Pope. Sadly the Papal conclave overlooked him, probably because he was away playing with his pipes.
