Tatiana was sitting in the window, watching it rain. It was a horribly gloomy day, and Tati was wishing for spring. She couldn't wait for blue skies and green grass. She loved being outside
"Hey Tati! Whatcha doing up here, all by yourself? Are you ok?" Remy hopped up on the windowsill, worried about her friend. Tati had seemed kind of blue lately.
"Eh, I'm just kind of tired of winter. I'm ready for spring. I want to go outside and play in the sunshine, maybe plant a little garden. I love gardening! But it's just so wet and nasty out, Remy!"
Remy nodded and smiled. Today seemed like the perfect day to give Tati the surprise she had stashed away.
The girls got off the windowsill, and wandered back to the room, which was surprisingly both clean and empty. Remy reached under the bed and pulled out...
Two gardening starter kits from the hardware store! Tati squealed in excitement and raised her arms in dolly joy. "I know how much you love growing things, so the human got us these!"
"Ooh, one for each of us," Tati said with excitement. Her gloomy mood vanished into thin air as she chose the tomato kit.
"Yep! Now maybe we can grow some yummy veggies and not eat pizza every night like Junie and Kei always want to do." Remy whispered the last bit... No one wanted to incur the wrath of the evil duo by dissing their favorite food.
"I'd better change out of this skirt if we're going to garden," Remy said, pulling a pair of old pants out of the closet. "Yeah, you'd better. Never garden in skirts and white pants," Tati informed her.
While she was changing, Tati began reading the instructions on the back of the tomato kit box.
"This says we have to soak the pellets in the tray in warm water before we can plant our seeds. Um, where's the hose?"
"No hose," Remy said, "But I've got this bucket we can use!"
Many, many trips to the bathroom faucet, a bunch of buckets of water, and a couple of spills later, the girls had the tray filled with water, and the peat pellets had expanded so they could plant their seeds.
Remy and Tati grabbed a pair of scissors and opened up the packets of seeds.
"Hey! We've been gypped!" Remy griped as she tried to shake her seeds into her hand.
"My packet is empty!"
Fortunatly, there were enough seeds in Tati's packet for each peat pellet to get one seed, although Remy was still peeved about her empty packet.
"I hope a couple of these sprout," she groused. "I can't believe that out of all the kits at the store, the human picked up the one with half the seeds."
They poked holes in the soil with Kei's toothbrush and finished planting the tomato seeds. Snapping the plastic greenhouse cover on top, they finished with the tomatoes. They moved the tomato tray to the table, and started work on the peppers.
The peppers didn't take them very long to do. Remy was happy, both of the seed packets had plenty of seeds. Each peat pellet ended up with at least four seeds.
"Thanks so much for that, Remy! It really helped my mood," Tati grinned.
"No problem, I can't wait for spring either. But, do you really think they'll grow big enough for us to plant outside and harvest some veggies?" Remy asked.
"No, not really. Given our human's track record as a brown thumbed plant killer, I don't see them living long if they actually sprout. But either way, it was fun!"
