Swallowtails-- The Papilios.
COMMON MORMON ( PAPILIO POLYTES) . Most swallowtails lay their eggs singly on the grwing shoots of the food plant. Their eggs are usually pale yellowish green, smooth and spherical. All swallowtails caterpillars have a forked organ behind their head that produces an alarm and gives off a strong smell to deter predators.Caterpillars initially appear like fresh bird droppings and are green in the last instar..
Their food plants are lime, oranges, and curry leaf plants.Pupae may be green or mottled brown to resemble a twig, attached to their perch at an angle at their base, with silken girdle supporting the pupa in the middle.
The female Mormon exists in three colour forms: in two forms it mimcs two red bodied swallowtails, the Common Rose and Crimson Rose and in the third form it resembles the male.
