Ministry of Interior Clashes
A small photo collection taken during the latest round of clashes outside the Ministry of Interior on Mohamad Mahmoud St. in downtown Cairo. These photos highlight the situation away from the scene of the clashes. The clashes began on February 2, 2012, when hardcore Ahly football club fans, known as 'Ultras', marched on the Ministry of Interior to claim retribution for the death of at least 73 of their colleagues at a soccer match in Port Said the previous night, when fans from the opposing Masry football club brutally attacked their Ahly counterparts with clubs, knives, and other weapons at the end of the game, while Central Security Forces (CSF) were seen standing idly by and doing nothing to stop the bloodshed. The 'Ultras' blame the Ministry of Interior for, at best, failing to appropriately intervene, or at worst, directly conspiring in the massacre by hiring a third-party to carry out the attack. An investigation into the incident is currently under way.
