half century of strife between Church and State in Italy.
A renegade former barber Giuseppe Abate, organized a Crypto Catholic
Church of his own on the near West Side. The Celestrial Messenger, as
he called himself, dressed papal fashion and posed in his office with a
young girl identified as the “Virgin Mary at age 12” on the couch. Note
barber chair “relic”. 1919.
The Damiani (Marchigiani) family found success in the house moving
business in the 1920s in Chicago Heights. The skill and resourcefulness
demonstrated in this photo is impressive.
