Our home Christmas tree for 2011. We knew we were flying out to Utah to see the kids, so why put up the regular tree?
I did the narration for a Christmas Show at the LDS Temple in D.C. on Sunday the 18th. It was fun!
12/20: On the plane to Salt Lake City. We were seated around Mormon Elders returning home after their two year missions.
Our hotel for our first two nights: The Grand American in SLC, street view.
12/20: They had an anniversary cake (our 31st) waiting for us when we got to the Grand American hotel in Salt Lake City!
Beautiful hotel suite!
Shower/tub. When it was time to leave Cari said, "I want to spend the rest of my life here. Now I know why people want to live in hotels."
Nice view from the window! That's City Hall at right.
Up 600 East looking towards the U of U campus.
16th floor drop.
Check out the giant Gingerbread house!
Gingerbread house; another view.

Cathedral of the Madeleine, Salt Lake City. I stopped in to hear a string ensemble playing; it was very nice. Video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUWDDNoahEU&feature=related

Meredith by her tree in her home.
12/22 - Dinner at Zupa's with the kids. It was on this occasion that Ethan reveled that he's going to become a father:
Lights near Temple Square.
Sarah and Cari.
We roamed around Temple Square. It was pretty cold, but Julie was warm in what we called her sleeping bag coat.
Me and a pal, 10th floor of Joseph Smith Building.
He doesn't like Ethan so much.
12/22 - We visited Temple Square to look at the lights. This is from the tenth floor of the Joseph Smith Building.
12/22 - At Meredith's house.
12/23 - Shopping at some mall just south of SLC. (Cari told me what it was named, but I forgot.)
Me and Dale Evans, Queen of the Cowgirls.
12/23 - We stopped in a jam-packed toy store in Provo where I saw this really cool old Schwinn set up as a display.
12/23 - Our friends the Madsens after our Chinese food dinner trip. (I neglected to take the usual "dining out" photo.)
12/24 - Cari gets a Christmas Eve 'do from Sarah...
12/24: Christmas Eve dinner!
12/25 - Dona and Cari.
This is the oddest photo of the two of them I have ever seen.
12/25 - Christmas Dinner...
Cari and Julie with Meredith's new puppy.
Meredith wanted a camera angle that represented a food's eye view.
Dinner - interesting sunlight!
12/25 - The overhead view getting everyone. Fifteen people with me, the photographer.
Grandpa at the organ.
12/26 - Lunch with the Madsens, Heap's (aka Brick Oven) in Provo.
This is the silly shot.
Ethan in the Joseph Smith building.
Julie and Tommy's apartment in Salt Lake City.
Sarah does a family cut.
A crescent Moon and Venus over Salt Lake City from Julie and Tommy's window.
Having dinner with Grandpa...
12/27 - A travel day. Waiting to board in SLC.
It looked sunny above the clouds, but in Northern Virginia it was all rain.
We got a rainbow looking out of the windows of Reagan National Airport.
12/27 - When we arrived back from our Utah vacation we found a box in the mail. My Marine Corps buddy Erv had mailed me the hard hat I used to wear when doing telephone construction work; he kept it for 33 years! (Since 1978, when he retired and I left the Corps.) Note Porsche sticker on front and writing on back (next photo).
12/27 - More personalization on back. My nickname when I was in the Corps was "Vambo" (after a song by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band). I used to draw that Blue Oyster Cult glyph all over the place, too. This wins the prize for most unusual Christmas present of 2011!
End of Christmas photos!
