School Librarians TEACH 21st Century Skills
Critical Thinking: Think Deep, Think Different Library collaboration and learning can take place outside the library. Last year, I wrote an initiative for Google Apps at our school and we have been piloting it with great success. Here, Javen and Taven show how 21st Century skills learned in the library can be integrated into other classes. Data from a science lab is shared via texting (yes, we allow cell phones!) and recorded on a Google Docs spreadsheet. Lab data for all 8th grade science classes is then shared and used by the students to formulate scientific conclusions. Library: East Middle School, Grand Junction, CO Librarian: Becky Johnson
Self-Direction: Own Your Learning Anna's Glog: Glogster EDU is a wonderful Web 2.0 tool that allows users to create electronic posters. Text, video, audio and animation can be added to the Glog to create an electronic, interactive poster. I love that Anna shows ownership in her Music Glog, especially by embedding samples of her own music (the play buttons in the flowers).
