The boulder on top was huge and just balanced!
We had to walk through the tiny slot space at left, under boulder.

Erosion at its finest, creating art in the rocks.
This is desert varnish. It is caused by the dissolving of iron oxide and manganese oxide in water that runs over the rock during spring rains and melting snow. The water evaporates leaving these mineral deposits.
The color on these pics doesn't capture the colors of the varnish in person.
The pine on the right is growing out of sheer rock, there must have been just enough soil for seeds to implant.
Pictograph Point is the largest and best known group of petroglyphs in Mesa Verde. It is misnamed: pictographs are painted ON rocks, where petroglyphys are carved into the rocks. These were carved.
These are believed to be representations of the Puebloan people.
These are believed to be Parrot Clan symbol, telling of that group taking up residence at some distance from the Mountain Sheep Clan.
The notched line is often thought of as representing mountains
The square- ish shape in the center that looks like a maze is thought to represent a "Sipapu" which is the place that the Pueblo people emerged to this earth [Grand Canyon]. The bird to the left of the left hand print is thought to be representing the Eagle Clan, indicating a separation of that clan from the other people and settlement near their point of origin.
In the left quadrant is a Mountain Sheep, thought to represent that clan's separation from the other migrating people and there settlement some distance from the others' travel route.Tradition says this clan "dropped off" in the vicinity of Shiprock NM. The circular marking, under the notches, in lower right corner is a Kachina Clan symbol.

This is the top of Spruce Tree House. There was a huge fire here and the fire line stopped here. They dumped fire retardent on the area [from planes] to keep the cliff dwellings safe. On the left side of picture, where the fire rages, on the right side of picture is where it stopped, due to retardant.
