Fruit Tree Grafting - April 2012
Brenin Wertz-Roth from Giving Tree Farm and Nursery taught an incredible hands-on workshop featuring the skills that open a whole new world of possibility for gardeners and home orchardists. We explored the tools and methods needed to cheaply create fruit trees which combined specific varieties with the characteristics best suited to sites, including size, disease resistance, and soil adaptation. We also saw a demonstration of how to repair real trees with severely damaged bark, and reworked established trees with new varieties. Participants left the workshop with understanding and practical experience, grafting knives and their own newly grafted trees. This event was made possible by a partnership between ISLAND, the NRCS, and the Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference, with support from Krios Consulting, Oryana, and Rising Star Wellness. Very special thanks to our friends at Ware Farm for hosting the workshop on Sunday the 30th.
