THIS IS HOW IT REALLY LOOKS TO THE non-dark adapeted eye! This is in a nominally clear, Moon-less sky. This is looking SOUTH. The huge bright orange lights are mostly Pilkington's Glass Cowley Hill plant 1.5 miles away. The huge white lights are the new Langtree rugby / football stadium near the Tesco Express in the Town Centre of St.Helens, about 2 miles away. This is the view from the landing window (upstairs hallway). The direct huge bright white lights from Pilkington's Glass Ravenhead plant are hidden by the roof of my next door neighbour's house in this view, but are still having a noticeable contribution to the sky glow to the South. You see them much better from near to the top of nearby Lorton Avenue. The best I can see from here e.g. in Orion, with no Moon and when it's clear, is I can see 29 Orionis at magnitude 4.13, 28 degrees above the horizon. From non-light polluted places you can see down to mag. 7 (1000 times fainter than mag. 4!). It's rather pathetic from here due to the bad Light Pollution.
Anyone see any STARS? I don't. Darned sky glow. SHOULD be about 500 stars visible in this view.
Still looking out of the landing window, now looking South West. Liverpool City centre (12 miles away) and it's outer urban area are causing the glow near the centre of this image. Look at how many HPS Sodium lights there are! Rediculous. ALL are UNSHIELDED and GLARE into my eyes. Light is going UPWARDS where it is NOT wanted an wasted. What a shame and spoils the sky needlessly.
A580 East Lancashire Road between Liverpool and Manchester (left of image) lit up like there's no tomorrow. Unshielded lighrs. Don't they know I have headlights on my car? Why do I need it THAT bright? I only wanted a low soft glow. Not to have them glaring into my face!
Stars over Liverpool? I don't see any. Liverpool would be in the centre of this image (it's 12 miles away).
Looking West out of the back bedroom window. Wow man is the Rainford Bypass (A570) ever BRIGHT (right hand side of image).
Looking dew West towards Southport (22.5 miles away) and it's starting to go noticeably darker!
WOW look how the sky glow dropped in level hugely as we look North West, away from St.Helens town centre and away from Liverpool City centre.
Oh my goodness, I can actually see the odd Star or two. This is looking North out of the back badroom window. So basically towards Skelmersdale, Crank, Billinge, Orrell and Rainford. Rainford must be good to live in for LP.
Ooohh is that a couple of Stars that I can see, wow. In a dark sky I should be able to see hundreds! And where has the Milky Way gone?! Lost in a nightmare of dull orange!
