A base with a music winder thread guide. Piece of foam is to provide drag to keep the thread under control.
Sam as before, only a wire clothes hanger for the thread guide. The foam is in use elsewhere at the moment. I have another of these in use, and not pictured.

This works. It is a foam/plastic webbing found on fragile fruit at the grocery store.
I mostly use the foam things for thread storage. It keeps the loose thread ends under control.
