Approaching Suomenlinna from the sea, its a 15 minute cruise from the pier at Helsinki. I loved the icy approach and in fact the entire surronding sea that was still frozen.
Out of the Pier and into the Island through the soldiers barracks
Soldiers barracks... I liked the colour
Entering the Walls and fortifactions of Suomenlinna - the fortress
The tomb of Augustin Ehrensvärd (who was commissioned to build it by the Swedish crown)
The tomb of Augustin Ehrensvärd
Two very small Cannons, Not sure how far they can fire
Interesting thing to stick on your Chimney, does this mean that a Witch lives in that house?
The stunning, crisp and beautiful frozen gulf of Finland surronding Suomenlinna. I was told by the information centre in Helsinki that Suomenlinna is really recomended in Summer, but looking at it in Winter - I think I made the right choice to visit it just the same! I absolutely loved it!
This photo is a bit tricky which is why I like it... can you really tell that it was taken from a hill overlooking the frozen sea?
The fortress had some more serious Cannon's then the one's seen previously
Me! loving it!
Snowboarders looking over the hill and getting ready to rumble

More Cannon, in a nice snowy setting
The hills forms part of a natural defense barrier
Looking back to the magnificent and silent sea
Arriving at the fortified part of the hill
Fortifications, the Fortress has a star design - this is to allow as many angels and to provide fire cover - see more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_fort
A tiny light house
Can you see the Ice path in the sea?
A world full of sea ice
Luckily still unused
Cannon's lying around at the Fortress main building (just in front of it)
Now these look more modern, though still old
Suomenlinna had and still has a working Drydock to fix vessels
Looking towards the exit from the Drydock (exit for vessels that is), a lot of Shipping masts... its a busy Drydock
Parked in the snow
This looks like some sort of Ironclad, or even a very old submarine, but I am not sure, its a wierd one...
On the vessel (this was actually taken on the way to Suomenlinna, not from it)
Me! Loving it!
Imagine living on that tiny island... and in winter...
The outskirts of Helsinki downtown - you can already see the Silja line in the background...
