My adventure on Rax, started in Hirschwang an der Rax.
To make it a round trip route, I ran along the Wasserleitengsweg route for a few miles.
It went along the Schwarza River
The water was super clear
The trail was nice also
Last shot of the river at Kasserbrunn. This is where the climbing started.
I took the Brandschneide route onto the mountain. Sign says 2.5 hours, but I did it in 1.5 hours. It was a super steep climb with 3,500 feet of gain in about 3 miles. And it was hot and muggy.
The bottom was forested. This photo does not do the steepness justice.
Looking down at where I started the climb.
Up higher, there were many rock bands.
There got to be a bunch of rock climbing around here.
There were even some fixed cables.
And a ladder
The first of many views of Schneeburg.
There were a ton of flowers along the trails.
The first of many gasthof that I would encounter. This one was crowded as people can take a cable car from the valley to this point.
Ottohaus with Jakobskogel. I would return that way.
Looking down an impressive valley
Another protected section of trail
Heading up Scheibwaldhohe
Schneeburg and the impressive valley
Once on top of Rax, there is lots of high open terrian with many high points.
I would take this route on the way back. The trail goes along the edge of a big rock wall.
This gasthaus was located in a cool place. I eventually made it there.
View from the Gasthaus
This is my next goal, called Heukuppe. It is the high point of the Rax massif at 2007 meters
But first I will lose a bunch of elevation before climbing this.
On my way
Looking back at the Gasthaus
Lots of open terrain here.
There was a lot of haze, so the views into the valley did not come out well.
Looking back in the direction that I started with Schneeburg sticking up
View from the top of Heukuppe
The summit monument

My return route. Go to the next Gasthous and then climb the slope to the upper left.
Looking back at the Gasthaus.
Another view of my favorite Gasthaus (at least location wise)
This section of trail was cool. Close to the edge.
Guess what? Yet another Gasthous. I had a nice Soda with Himbeersaft.
Tree of Gasthaus signs with an impressive rock wall in the background
Another valley view
Heading across high terrain with a big drop to the right
Schneeburg from the top of Jakobskogel. The last high point of the day. Back to the car now.
This cool little tunnel was on my trail to the car
Getting down close to town now.
The trail through the outskirts of town.
This old church was at the end of the trail.
