Daprting for the out and back run from Carvers Gap which is right on teh NC/TN boarder.
Paul and myself did a roughtly 30 mile run (15 mile out and back).
The first section was a really nicely maintained trail going up the first climb.
Morning clouds sitting in the valleys.
Paul on the way out.
View from the top of Jane's Bald
Onward we go.
Looking back at where we started
The Red Barn. This is a camping shelter along the AT trail (which we were running on).
This section of the AT goes across many Balds giving some great views.
We meet up with my father who we dropped off at the turn around point. He hiked the trail in one direction and meet us back at the car.
On top of Big Bald.
Looking down Houston Ridge
Cool rock wall we went by.
The trails had lots of roots on them
Narrow passage way
Going across a meadow
Lots of flowers out.
The storms starting forming on the way back
We made it back to the car just as it was begining to storm. Perfect timing.
The next day we went hiking at Grandfather Mountain. Paul is getting our permit here.
We went up the Nuwati Trail. The trail was mostly forested, but there was a few good view points on the way up.
These trails had several ladders to negotiate some rock faces.
Typical trail section
Looking down on the Blue Ridge Parkway
On top of Calloway Peak (5,946 feet)
Some clouds provided some much appreciated shade.
Looking over at MacRae Peak
View back from where we came
Paul coming down the gully
More ladders. The trail actually goes through a natural tunner here.
Going up MacRae Peak (5844 feet)
Looking at the swinging bridge from the top of MacRae Peak. From here we retraced our steps back to the car.
