The race director giving a prerace briefing. He is explaining the trail markers here. Unfortunately it was in Italian.
But we did have a translator to English and German.
Few shots of the start/finish
They had a band and disco going on when I finished.
We could use three drop bags. They gave us these color coded bags to put our stuff in.
Yes, there was a party at the finish which I think lasted for two days.
Mark, another US runner
The "punching" of the athletes. They actually just called everyone's bib numbers just before the start of the race.
Kim and Tim, also from the US
Me at the start/finish
The race started at 6pm and the sun set shortly after.
The race started in Vivaro, Italy. We had to run a bit until we got into the mountains.
It was about 20 miles to the mountains.
Ran through this little town just before sunrise.
The race went on a combination of road, footpaths, and trail.
Sunrise finally gave me an opportunity to see what I had been running though.
On the way up another climb
This trail was nice. A lot of it was fairly technical with lots of rocks.
Working our way up to that gap. This was the biggest and steepest climb of the race. About 3,300 feet in 2.5 miles.
Lots of little switchbacks on the way up
Stepping of the edge of the trail would have been very bad
Finally on the ridge line
Lots of mountains to the north and west
Looking back from where I came
I did not know at the time, but I would be running over that dam shortly.
The race also went through two 1 mile long tunnels.
You could see the other side but still needed a headlamp
This was my last picture during the race, but I came back here the next day as this area was cool
My bib number. I finished in a time of 30:07:17 which was good for 16th place.
My finishers vest
I joined Rebecca and Jaleo on a slow hike the day after the race
The water was so clear and green in color
The race ran on this trail along the stream
Looking down river
This hike is in the Dolomiti Friulane area of Italy
I think that we were on the Frassaneit Trail. There were several rock climbing areas along the trail.
I found a rock climb named after me!
It would be a nice place to climb
A waterfall from a side stream
Rebecca and Jaleo
We hiked for about a mile and half before turning around
Some took a lot of time to stack this wood pile so tightly
