"Chican@ Legacy" Mural Project (2009-2011)
At a town hall meeting in 2007, students were presented with a proposal to bring community-based art to the campus. The response was positive and members of MEChA and other students met with OASIS director Patrick Velasquez to develop mural content. A draft diagram was created by artist Mario Torero and presented to key administrators. Chancellor Fox did not oppose the idea and told Dr. Jorge Mariscal that he should pursue the plan. Vice Chancellor Penny Rue and Chief Diversity Officer Sandra Daley were not supportive. With the help of the Dean of Arts and Humanities, a temporary mural project was installed on Peterson Hall on October 1, 2009. In February of 2010, a series of racist incidents rocked the UCSD campus. The Black Student Union and MEChA demanded that the mural be made permanent. It was decided to shift from a painted tarp to a mosaic. Vice Chancellor Gary Matthews provided funding. The mosaic was installed in April and unveiled on May 25, 2011.
