at the BKK main train station...
looks like a nuclear blast
hmhmh I need to order these pics... this is the new UN bldg in Vientiane... they got smart and put all the UN offices.. or most of them.. in one bldg... should have done that 168 years ago
victory monument Vientiane... far more interesting than victory monument Bangkok
my vientiane hotel... $8 night...
same place... not sure how wide the river is at this location... maybe 1km? anyone know? look at the huge sandbar... takes up half the width of the river... so I wonder... as the Chinese dam up the river and ruin the ecology above this point... what happens here when the water raises and lowers unnaturally?
ok the best sunset pic I can manage at 640k resolution...
do you want me to delete some pics by now... hahah never...
I like this one... playing with black and white... just your ordinary polluter.. somebody wedged a non-biodegradable sprite bottle in he crease of a huge kapoc like tree that washed up on the bank of the river... goes back to my question... what happens with the Chinese damming the river up above... I think there are going to be long term consequences... unanswered flooding and dry spells... not to mention the angry fish and other aquatic creatures...
this one using sepia... my favorite colorization... I think I will shoot everything in sepia from now till the end
ok I know it looks like there was a nuclear explosion over Laos... really... do not get excited... just a bad shot and many more bad ones to come
so this one is worse than the first... don't you agree... using the solarize function on my phone... ok... what is it... well it is the sun to the west over the mekong in vientiane
see the bldg in the middle? Vientiane's tallest structure... they built it at the curve of the river... not really sure what it is ... just another big ugly expensive bldg blocking my view.
this is a cool scene... the local African community set up a riverside eatery in the same mode as the other Laotian spots... what could be better.. relax on the riverside... enjoy the fresh air and eat some exotic foods from Africa... I think they were serving fried chicken and rice..
sandy soils.. river bank... relaxation...
this is your typical faire... BBQ bits and pieces of various animal and animal like creatures captured from aquatic and non aquatic environments
I first visited Vientiane in 1994.. at that time few streets were paved... now they are all paved... but it is still a sleepy town... love it.
grainy night pic of the ugly big hotel on the river bank...
I'd much rather stay in this hotel... looks like something you may see on the slops of Mt Everest... wait I have never been to Mt Everest... ok I can use my imagination
cafe... hey have a lovely outdoor seating area on the right... Laos has a distinctive Latin feel to it...
in a town that moderates commercial adertising this one really made me sad... they painted all the Nam Phu benches with a putrid Thai Airways purple... doesn't bother me when sitting down... except when I look at all the other benches and feel I an no longer in a quaint Laotian capital.
after a late buzz of preparing paperwork... see the electric stuff behind... I was able to plug in my laptop and get a great signal from the Thai side of the river to connect up to the Thai edge/gprs... cheap net in Laos using my Thai SIM.. cool.
my telephone was never meant to be a night time camera
but this one seems to have made it... nice... I wanted to get in the ride but they said I am too fat
wish I had one of these as a kid
more lights... seems those Laotians like lights.
hmhmh hard to see.. can you zoom in on the herbal bath sign... I found this back road steam bath... cost 10,000 Kip for a relax in their steam bath... at present 8500 kip = $1 not a bad place... I will go back next trip to Laos. I hear there are many such places in town..
example of a newish apartment bldg... when I compare Laotian bldgs to Thailand ... I'll go with Laos...
river front road
Laotian Tuk Tuk
need a basket
they use these for sticky rice... yummy I could live on sticky rice and namtok
where do you want to live?
young Laotians all seem to have a motorbike these days... wish they would take up bicycling
these four terrors were funny as can be... I am amazed at the way youth has changed so fast... hard to tell them apart form Thai youth now.. while a few years ago there was a major difference.
you may have thought it is a grotesquely huge firefly... but sorry you would be wring it is manmade
this scene has not changed much since 1994... on the edge of Nam Phu...
and that is Nam Phu... "fountain"
still alive... barely... had a mad dash to get my passport from the Thai embassy and rush to the border--notice same shirt from the day before... I took only three shirts on this trip... a bit of deodorant does the trick.. socks and undies get hand washed in the sink...
fair in Udon Thani
very cool stuff... r u ready?
a water powered motorcycle... the water filter looking device on the right is an electrolysis mechanism - the clear plastic collection device that is hanging by two pipes sits in the middle
how about a 4 cylinder running on hydrogen, same device... just a bigger engine
I got tired of the yellow shirt terrorists (have to know Thailand to understand that one) so I joined the reds..
see how happy I am ready to dispose of the yellows
this was the coolest... I am some 10 meters up... looking into a pit of motorcycles and a yellow car...
so what do they do.. well these guys ride up the slight incline on the walls of this huge cylinder and well keep riding until they are buzzing the walls of the cylinder held up by centrifugal force... cool stuff...
you can even do it with a heavy car... no kidding this crazy dude drove his car around the cylinder
I wish that light was not there... messes up my pic
had to try the old spider machine... was a good laugh... but I felt it was in disrepair... images of my fat butt falling out kept my adrenaline up
they had a huge festival in Udon Thani near the mall... I was terribly disappointed as it was really just a big show of Chinese stuff... China will take over the world in a few weeks
99 baht buffet for dinner - fun and the diarrhea afterward is not so bad
cold night and aching stomach
the inedible part
looks like sand... but it is spicy sugar
out my hotel window... stay at the Karin hotel in Udon Thani... 400 baht a night for a great room... would be 3 times that in Bangkok
