Haiphong center left... Cat Ba island with the big green national park... Ha Long on the top
18:10 train Long Bien Hanoi to Haiphong.... loved it... everyone should try this route... 34K dong one way...
<SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA>
fun park in Haiphong... just down the road from my hotel
I wanted to ride this one.... but it is no fun if I am the only one at the party... :(
a very tame roller coaster
Vietnamese kids love to have their photo taken...
this boy wanted the cool look as he talked on his phone....
outdoor barbers in Haiphong
what is the name of this fruit... I forgot...
pomelo... yummy... one of my favorites
this old window seems to have so much character after countless stapled and pasted postings put on and removed...
up close on the same window or is it a door?
this bicycle looked to be a good 30 years or so old... tires were rotting off.... but with a bit of oil and repairs it is good to go again
fresh oranges... yummy!
I had to buy a helmet so I could ride around town with an old friend
not sure why I clicked this one... I suppose it is not terribly strange to see boned near a tree... what kind of bones... who knows... maybe dog?
I had to check out the local pool.... arrived too early.... back in 30 minutes and it fills up a bit... the water was nice... good swim... interesting point... many pools I have been to in Vietnam are covered in a plastic liner... the big white boxes you see with the pool ladders are filters.... seems someone has a nice business covering pools and selling filters...
all over Vietnam cast plaster panting is very popular...
Haiphong train station
Vietnamese love their ice cream... my all-time favorite is Kem Trang Tien in Hanoi... you can ride your motorcycle into the shop and select from 3 sellers... sit on your bike and enjoy a mediocre ice cream stick.... the experience is well worth it
looks like the Haiphong opera house
this water tower caught my attention
Wujai took me around town. We were supposed to meet his girlfriend for coffee but she never showed up... his sister is in the next pic
boat to Cat Ba island - plenty of boats to choose from.... this one cost 130K dong... cheaper than the rest... but perfectly fine... is a Russian made hydrofoil... I see these boats all over southeast Asia
the famous karst rocks of Halong bay - on the Haiphong side
Cat Ba town bay
I took a motorcycle taxi across the island to catch a ferry at Tran Chau ferry point...
they are filling in many bays to make luxury estates... sad...
arrived at the pier too early.. but luckily there was an empty tourist boat headed to Halong ... the mafia stuck me for 100K and I paid the boat 100K... paid the motorbike taxi 100K... so I lost on this one.... anyhow that is the price you pay sometimes when they see an easy way to get some extra from foreigners... at least I had the boat to myself.... nice.... slow trip to Halong and only myself to argue with... :)>
that chair has character
typical tourist boat on Halong
that is the ferry boat I intended to catch... headed in the opposite direction - yes the big yellow one
ok that is the standard shot of karst topography... my first encounter with karst was in Guilin China in 1985... wish I had a digital camera back then...
my boat captian
that is one of the many luxury Junks plying the nearby waters... for a fee you can sleep the night on one of these... AC and all... no thanks... I'd rather have a hammock on a rickety row boat as opposed to the price they command to be trapped in a cabin on the water
a look at the crowded hilly streets of Halong - I had to rush to find some wifi so I could check the already in progress USC Hawaii football game score...
I have seen this suspension bridge style in several other places in Vietnam... very stunning... there is another big on one My Tho - surely more
in Hon Gai
this pic was a mistake.... might as well keep it.... would make a nice computer background
reminds me of hong Kong island
these kids rushed over to see what I was doing on my computer in the cafe around 10pm... they brought their drinks over and hung out with me for 15 minutes or so... I put them on webcam so my chat friends could see them....
