Mortar Rock and Grotto Rock
Ivy had overrun Mortar Rock Park, a small park with dozens of Native American grinding holes. Friends of Five Creeks volunteers, neighbors, and students from several schools cleared most of the ivy in fall 2007 and began planting natives that these original inhabitants would have seen and used. By early 2010, when we added a natural-history plaque, the area was transformed. Meanwhile, in 2009 we began helping at Grotto Rock Park, another volcanic outcrop nearby. We removed invasives, planted natives, and re-did paths for safety -- a project that involved, among other things, moving 10 tons of decomposed granite.
