Founder's Day 2010

Women in Design kicked off our five year milestone with a fabulous Founder's Day celebration. It was a fun time to thank our past board for all the great work that they did and to introduce our new 2010-2011 board. A big thank you to our sponsors for making this event happen and to Laura Sterchi for donating the amazing space to our organization.

We Care Event

We had a great turnout at our We Care event. WID created two crafts with the kids, an origami Christmas tree and an ornament for them to decorate. A big thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible.

Habitat for Humanity 2009

This past weekend WidKC participated in a women build. Our team of ladies put up siding on the back of the house and built a deck. It was a fun day of satisfying work. We hope to see you next year.

Gifted Hands "Empowerment Through Art"

Gifted Hands "Empowerment Through Art" was a Brilliant Success! We had about 10 volunteers and 30+ students attending the event. The girls created a personal logo and created a stamp out of it. Next they decorated a sketch book with the stamp and other items. Its amazing how effective it is and how empowered they felt. I will never forget the look of their faces when they first used their stamp. Also there was a little girl who wanted to start a business breeding horses. Her logo and stamp came out so well. WiD supported a young entrepreneur!!!

We Care

Despite the snowstorm we still managed to get enough people to help at this year's We Care event. Hosted by the Boys & Girls Club, various companies design small crafts for 6-12 year old children to make and then give as gifts for the holidays. Promoting sustainability, our craft was a reuseable bag with the phrase "think green" stamped on the front that the kids decorated.

Women In Art

Artists, architects, and curators gathered to discus their local design projects at the event, Women In Art. These projects: Oppenstein Park, Drug Free Sport, and the Paragraph Gallery were compared at the panel discussion moderated by Kathy Aron Dowell. Our largest attendance and exciting projects made this event a huge success!

Girl Scouts Sweet Ambitions

A few of the women from Women In Design participated in Girl Scouts Sweet Ambitions: an event for the Girl Scouts with special guest Constance Ramos from Extreme Home Makeover. We helped the Girl Scouts pick finishes for an interior design activity and they also learned about job opportunites that can build on their unique interests and skills.

Lunch Conversation

Women In Design is hosting mentorship lunches where we meet at various restaurants in the KC area and discus topics including time management, liscening/internship, business development, and life/work balance. These gatherings are intended to be very casual and encourage women to voice their thoughts/ideas/experiences. Before the monthly mentorship lunches began, we initiated this concept by hosting these conversations at the AIA offices (shown here).
