On the plane. Cari sat between Ichabod Crane and me.
Utah from the air. It has really grown here since I was in college at BYU.
The breast cancer awareness plane. My wife, a breast cancer survivor, is REALLY sick of seeing pink ribbons everywhere.
Our rental car, a Chevy Cobalt. Not a bad little car but not a good one, either.
The phantasmagorical Draper waterpark as seen from our hotel parking lot.
The Draper Temple, newly dedicated and opened earlier this year.
An odd Utah thing: "fry sauce." (A mixture of catsup and mayonnaise.) You get it at burger joints. Whether you want it or not is another matter.
At the Subzero Ice Cream Parlor, where liquid nitrogen is used to prepare the ice cream. As a demo, this fellow flash froze a gummi-bear. When he dropped it on the counter it cracked into a bunch of pieces.
Subzero Ice Cream: The liquid ice cream base is poured into this bowl with the extra ingredients and liquid nitrogen is added to flash freeze the contents. It is then mixed and served. It's good... but, let's face it, a gimmick.
The gang at a noodles joint, 8/20/09. From L to R: My son Ethan, his wife Sarah, my wife Cari, my daughter Julie, my daughter Meredith, Sarah's brother Quincy, Ethan's friend Sean, Ethan's friend Charles (lately returned from a mission).
Dopplegangers. Apparently the railroad bandana on the head rough-and-ready outdoorsy look is popular in Utah. This stranger dressed exactly like Sean walked in while we were eating at the noodles joint.
...but it's a dry sort of heat. (Like a blast furnace.)
Eric and Tommy Hofer - Steady Machete, performing at Kilby Court, 8/21. (Tommy is my son-in-law.) Interesting venue; a converted garage in an oddly industrial/residential section of Salt Lake City. This was a CD release concert.
Tommy plays a Geddy Lee Fender Jazz bass.
Ethan and his Auntie Dona, 8/21, Kilby Court, Salt Lake City.
Siblings. I always get a kick out of when they line up in this dorky and awkward arms-on-shoulders pose. (There's a photo of Napoleon Dynamite and his brother Kip like this.)
The Conference Center at Temple Square - in infrared. (The IR filter turns foliage white.) 8/22.
Temple as seen from the top of the former Hotel Utah, now the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, Salt Lake City, Utah. Infrared, 8/22. The real color image of this makes a nice cell phone wallpaper.
Infrared Temple Spires, Salt Lake City, 8/22.
Salt Lake Temple, infrared light, 8/22.
Julie and Tommy, "The Pie" near the U of U), SLC, Utah, 8/22.
Orson Pratt's clever wagon wheel odometer in the Church History Museum, SLC, Utah, 8/22. I love this thing...
Bored on Mars - Clark Planetarium, SLC, 8/22.
Julie on the Moon, Clark Planetarium, SLC, 8/22.
Meredith made some cupcakes! 8/22, Lehi, Utah.
"Stonehenge of Orem," a nursing home. Frankly, I don't get it. 8/23.
The sign sort of takes away from the Mesolithic grandeur and appeal of the design...
The Oquirrh Mountain Temple (South Jordan, Utah), newly dedicated 8/23/09. We saw the dedication ceremony by closed circuit televison as a Sunday service. This was neat!
Sunday dinner at Mom and Dad Bilyeu's house in Sandy, Utah, 8/23/09. Back row: Leighton Jensen, Mauri Jensen, Casey Dittman, Tommy Hofer, Julie Hofer, Yours Truly, Sarah Clark, Ethan Clark. Seated, L to R: Rick Dittman, Dona Dittman, Velda Bilyeu, Don Bilyeu, Cari Clark, Meredith Clark. I borrowed Dad's tripod... Okay: Mom and Dad are in the middle, obviously. Cari and Dona are their daughters. Mauri and Casey are Dona's kids. Leighton is Mauri's husband. Rick is Dona's husband. The rest are mine. This is the first time all 14 of us got in a shot together.
We call this the "Christmas Card photo." Sandy, Utah, Sunday, 8/23/09. Mom and Dad Bilyeu's backyard. We were going to get Ethan's dog Buddy into the shot, but it was starting to rain and dogs aren't terribly cooperative with photos...
Lunch at the Market Street Broiler with Julie, Monday, 8/24.
Dinner at Heap's of Pizza (okay, it's really called Brick Oven Pizza but 1980's alumni like me refer to it by the old name) in Provo with the Averys and Ethan. This place is the Anti-Pie (see a few photos back). The U of U has The Pie, which is in a basement, dark, greasy (but delicious) and with odd ambient music. Very collegiate. Heap's is expansive, bright, family-friendly and delicious - so it suits BYU students and alumni. So the cultural differences between the two schools can be seen to be reflected in their pizza joints! Monday, 8/24. Naturally, I greatly prefer Heap's. That is, Brick Oven.
Heap's (of Pizza) was established in 1956 - and so were Bob and I. After dinner we went to the BYU Creamery for fresh ice cream. YUM! A total fat fest.
Concrete railroad ties! Never saw that before. I wonder if it's the coming thing... Provo, 8/25.
Ethan on the Sundance ski lift, 8/25.
The view backwards.
The steepest part of the ascent, up to the 7,100 foot elevation. 8/25. Sundance Resort - up Provo Canyon.
A running stream in a beautiful sylvan setting, Sundance.
Getting Meredith's dorm room sorted out.
There was a black marble globe seated in water at the University Mall in Orem... I was having a blast rolling it to see how fast I could get it moving. Wed., 8/27.
Anubis, the Egyptian Jackal Dog.
Wednesday, 8/27: Cari, Meredith, Sarah & Ethan, Orem, UT.
Hugging my baby until she comes East for Christmas. Wednesday, 8/27.
Until we meet again...
