Autumn colors in San Diego County, up in the Laguna Mountains. First hike was near Wooded Hill, the second one the usual loop partly on the Pacific Crest Trail near Monument Peak, and then down to Big Laguna.

Mt Baldy loop, up via Ski Hut Trail and back via Devil's Backbone Trail and the service road for the ski lift. The little side tour to Mt Baldy West is well worth the effort to escape the tourists on the peak.

Beautiful hike up to Antsell Rock in the Desert Divide, a mountain range south of San Jacinto. After climbing up the rock, we went south on the Pacific Crest Trail past Apache Peak and back to Garner Valley on Spitler Peak Trail

It was unusually cold and windy. So the planned hike in the mountains south of San Jacinto was scrapped in favor of a desert hike. We did the Art Smith Trail, starting from the visitor center of the San Jacinto Mountain National Monument. The trail is somewhat tedious, and its end is anticlimactic. But just going half a mile further on the Hahn trail leads to a nice view point.

Hike towards San Gorgonio Peak from Aspen Grove trailhead in the San Bernardino Mountains. I did not make the peak this time due to time lost when trying to make it to Fish Creek Trailhead without four-wheel drive and not being in top shape (unlike my hiking partner, il Santelli). Had more time for taking pictures instead.

Left at 8:20 from Albertson Mall. Very long drive to Big Bear Lake, and then on on dirt road (with Santelli's car). Started hiking after noon. Got lost initially due to outdated/inadequate description in guide (one has to walk towards Champion Lodgepole Pine). Finally made it on the trail towards Bear Creek which turned out to disappear in chapparral after a mile or so. Walked back and made detour to various rocky outcroppings with views into Bear Creek Canyon. (Note: Also the undergrowth in high mountains in Southern California produces lots of scratches if one walks in shorts off-trail)

Pictures of two cross country outings in the Laguna Mountains on 2/10 and 2/14, and a few more pictures from other outings. The first picture of the second trip is the one showing Garnet Peak. Up to a foot of snow in the shaded forested areas, and great skiing, in particular, on the meadows. As far as flowers go, May is probably the best month in the Laguna Meadows.

Lots of snow even in lower elevations in the San Diego Mountains. The downhill was a bit tricky in the steeper parts due to the icy snow and the deep tracks in it. I ended up carrying the skis down at a few tricky spots. Otherwise very beautiful indeed.

This album contains pictures taken during the big fires in Southern California in October 2007. The first 10 pictures were taken from public websites of the San Diego Herald Tribune, KPBS and flickr.com. The other pictures were taken by myself in Del Mar. The fires came all the way to Rancho Santa Fe, about 7 miles from Del Mar.
