Oyster Reef September '09

Photos of some results from the Mass Audubon/TNC/NOAA collaborative restoration of oyster habitat off Lieutenant Island in Wellfleet. Reef balls, culch, and oyster castles (aka spat blocks) were set out on the flats following an experimental design to determine which of the three methods works best for catching and growing wild oysters in Wellfleet. Sea Turtle Release

Release of 6 cold-stunned sea turtles from the 2008 season. Turtles had been rehabbed by the New England Aquarium and the University of New England's Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center after being taken off the beach by stranding volunteers and staff at Wellfleet Bay. Oyster Reef Building June 2009

Construction of the oyster reef experiment on Mass Audubon's tidal flats off Lieutenant Island, part of the Mass Audubon/The Nature Conservancy joint project to restore a natural oyster reef to the Wellfleet Bay system. Experimental design will test whether reef balls, culch, or oyster castles are best suited to growing oysters in Wellfleet Bay, and the results will guide future restorations around the Cape. Funding provided by NOAA.

Wellfleet Bay offers Cape Cod Field Schools every summer -- active, extended field experiences for adults. 2, 3, and 4-day courses explore a diversity of subjects including wildlife natural history and research, coastal ecology, the arts, and more.

Chatham High Dieback 10-08

A Chatham High School science class helps with saltmarsh dieback research at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. They collected data along vegetation transects and set up an experiment to determine if marsh crabs are indeed the culprit in the dieback of the low marsh cordgrass.

Smith College at Wellfleet Bay

Denise Lello's Plant Ecology class from Smith College came to Wellfleet Bay on Sat, Oct 4 to observe plant assemblages that create various upland and intertidal habitats at the sanctuary. Naturalist Dennis Murley took them out for a couple of hours in which they also learned about management strategies used to maintain these habitats. An added bonus was the opportunity to release hatchling diamondback terrapins back into the salt marsh!

Osprey Tagging Eastham

With funding generously provided by Craig Gibson working with Mass Audubon/Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Rob Bierregaard of UNC-Charlotte put a satellite transmitter on an Eastham osprey, a juvenile female, adding a new, high tech dimension to the Cape Cod osprey project. Sea Turtle Release 2008

Five Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles rescued by Mass Audubon/Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary volunteers saw the open sea for the first time in months when they were released on Wednesday July 30 at Dowse’s Beach in Osterville. These turtles had been rehabilitated at the New England Aquarium in Boston, the National Marine Life Center in Buzzard’s Bay, and at the University of New England’s Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center in Maine and looked fat and happy compared to when they were found cold-stunned and hypothermic on bayside beaches in November.
