Reach 11 Barrier Free Trail - Tread Protection & Drainage

Thanks to everyone who participated in this event! We worked on 4,700 feet of existing trail (asphalt repair, curb edging, brushing), and built 40 feet of rock wall. In addition, one hardened drainage was built and another extended –all accomplishments we can be proud of!

Grand Canyon North Rim

Cut back vegetation 5-6 feet on appx. 1 mile of shoulder on each side of the road (ergo: 2 miles total). Involved lopping, hand sawing and removing the slash, consisting mostly of very thorny mountain locust. For some it also involved traffic control.The weather was perfect, both day and night and everyone, although tired and sore after work, revived with good food, drink, cameraderie and some rest, to do it again and again. The crew managed to - once again - outperform the expectations of the NPS staff. As a bonus, a view pullout was cleared as well. No injuries that could not be dealt with with a 'pity party' occurred.

Jewel of the Creek - Cave Creek

Eighteen volunteers installed 4 stone steps at the north stream crossing, built 2 large stone cairns at the north crossing, pruned and trimmed the entire Harry Dalton Trail loop, closed 6 large social trails, repaired/rebuilt four drainage structures, installed 40' of erosion control one-rock wall, built 50' of new tread (and closed a damaged section of trail) and removed trash from the area. Total Volunteer Hours: 86

REI SP - Reach11 Barrier Free Trail

Eighty Two volunteers gathered into crews managed by 11 crew leaders to perform a very significant amount of rehabilitation work on this trail. In terms of logistics, this was one of the hardest events VOAz has held. The most difficult aspect may have been getting the rock correctly sorted and to the right location in a timely manner. But, we did well, our volunteers performed admirably and the crew leaders adjusted well to the situation. We definitely did more of the small edging than anticipated and more at the pond and the low crossing. Mike's crew had the most technically challenging job and they did a fine job of completing the culvert extensions; in part, thanks to the work the Mike and Eric did on Friday to set the extensions. We also want to thank Rick Gibbons for helping Michael Baker for over eight hours on Friday do additional set up work and repositioning rock. Canyon Creek Bullthistle Removal

Seventeen VOAZ volunteers wielded shovels, pruners and backpack sprayers to combat invasive Bullthistle and Canada Thistle near Canyon Creek in the Tonto National Forest. 10 acres were cleared (9 for Bull, 1 for Canada Thistile) over the weekend resulting in 144 hours donated by these volunteers. Camped at Upper Canyon Creek campground under the tall pines, everyone enjoyed getting away from the heat of the valley, the meals provided by VOAZ and, of course, the prize draw. Thom Hulen was awarded a Ten-pin for his 20th VOAZ event and Mike Snodgrass was recognized for his 100th (!) event.

Grand Canyon - South Rim Vegetation Management

Over the Memorial Day weekend, twenty one VOAz volunteers helped Grand Canyon National Park Vegetative Management staff implement GCNP’s Invasive Species Management Plan by pulling 19,374 invasive plant specimens(Mullein, Horehound, Bull Thistle, Scotch Thistle, Mediterranean Sage, Catnip, Foxtail). Approximately 30-acres of GCNP were treated. A total of 356 hours of work was provided. Photos & album by Gail Landry includesphotos from other volunteers.

Seven Mile Trail, Fort Apache

Seventeen VOAZ volunteers VOAZ volunteers returned to historic Ft. Apache to continue construction on the Sevenmile Trail project. The loop was linked to the trail heads, a large 4 step switchback was constructed along with numerous drain structures, and about 1000' of tread was completed. The group also returned to previously built sections to prune trees and plants that were encroaching the corridor. The White Mountain Apache Tribe provided a chainsaw operator to remove dead snags and other impediments. ** Volunteer Hours = 279

Dolan Springs Trail Kick-Off Event

On February 28 & March 1, 2009, twenty seven volunteers from VOAz and the community of Dolan Springs held a kick-off trail building and training event for a new trail project. Over 2,700 feet of trail was built in a beautiful area of Joshua Tree dotted desert on the edge of town. An additional reach of about the same length was flagged for future work. Ten community volunteers received a short course on the fundamentals of crew leadership so that they may help lead future community based work events.

Phx. Mountain Preserves Buffelgrass Removal

32 Voaz volunteers gathered once again to do battle with the buffelgrass infestation near Shaw Butte in Phoenix. This time the weather cooperated eminently and we had a gorgeous Arizona "early Spring" day and a great event with wonderful, very hard working people. We were able to pull, bag, and haul off 339 bags of buffelgrass in about 6 hours of work. We completed 192 volunteer hours at this event and we have now cleared over 4 acres of buffelgrass off this mountain in just two events. (Photos by Johnnie Grgurich and Lou Arminio)
