It was such a miracle to see the generator already in place when we arrived at The Bishop Asili Hospital. Even though the construction hadn't been finished, the generator was already wired to the hospital and working. The night we arrived, the electricity was not working, and so the generator lit up the hospital where otherwise health care workers would have been working in the dark.
Here she is in all her glory. It's a powerful piece of equipment that will allow the hospital to host a surgical suite (i.e., if the lights go off in the middle of a complicated surgery, the generator will kick right in). It will also allow them to run the CD-4 analyzer which will help AIDS patients monitor the extent of the virus in their system and make them eligible to receive anti-retroviral medication.
Here I am on Day 1-- obviously a little jet lagged.
A better look.
Progress was underway every moment we were there.
Sister Ernestine, the founder of the Bishop Asili Hospital, hired several of the most competent engineers in the country to install the system.
Not sure if this scaffolding would pass building code, but it worked!
Getting close to finished! The generator will reside in its own little “prison” so that no one can move it without a tank. As you can see, this generator is not going anywhere!
Almost done. The last day before we left, I'm here with the two top engineers in Uganda.
Sister Angela is an accountant at the hospital. They have documented every penny spent on the generator, down to the nails and bolts.
Bishop Asili hospital provides very thorough accounting of the purchase generator. Every cent donated by JLMC is accounted for.
