i think this relates to a lot of the advertisements in the mall i like the sale of gambling, but on my motorcycle it was a little difficult to get a good shot. there is a billboard near 16th and Penn for powerball. if this is an important element, I could take a photo
look at my ex boyfriend being dissed haha!
great sight lines direct the gaze into the pole. The lines are full of power both electrical and communication lines like cable and telephone. I like the feeling of distant or passive communication conveyed (especially with the hand carwash-a human touch).
like
!
! ml--Looking for something else even in a room full of fashionable, idealized people. In a roomful of people, you can feel quite lonely in a world of commodity. coldness and indifferent
! ml-bad framing--needs cropped
!!!!!!! ml - we get a sense of authority (professional watchers/gaurdians). We gain a connection to idealized beauty (a woman with all body and no mind). Relfective surfaces, commerce (I just noticed the 50% off pun) and the holiday as noted by Amanda. do we judge people by the uniform they wear
ml- good reflective surface of the photo i like "born to fit" like it's destiny that you buy these jeans
i like this simply because it caught both of our gazes Christmas CONSUMMERISM
ML-I like engaging the gaze of an oject to be admired. Furthermore, this is a nice transition from animals to the flag. America has a lot of statues of buffaloes, but they are an animal that was hunted extensively. There is a quintessential patriotism about destruction/overuse. patriotism was a big theme in my pictures as well... i think that might be the one them that underlies all of our other themes, i.e. consumption, the flag, brand names...
that's cool, cop car reflected POSTMODERNISM archetectures are always with a lot of mirrors.
! ml-This is an US flag in fragments. This view of parts and pieces of an American experience resonates with both the gaze (lights/reflective surface of sculpture) and the contemporary life. i like it also
the phalanx of mannequins on the left is pretty creepy!
flag in the advertisement thing on the left, cop car on the right... i like it
ml- watching the object that wants to be watched and the professional gaurdian. haha, riding off into the sunset...
AY
! this is good too, sort of the whole leisure aspect of consumerism and also a more apparent view of exploitation? like how many products in the mall were manufactured by underpaid labor, usually asian? this is the cost of our consumerism
!!!!!!!!! ML-generally, all of these photos seem both candid and either focuse on people or commodity. This could be expanded (like the broken flag or artificial buffalo gaze in Matt's photos.
ML-if cropped this again goes to man making nature and then running nature out again
!!!!!!! ML-perfect photograph to either start or end a survey of the gaze in contemporary culture. You really want to buy this guy a drink and listen to Robert Johnson recordings. God bless you. This is the last words he told me after we waved our hands and said goodbye. He want me to take pictures for me. He forces me to smile. Something bad happen in that morning so that I was frowning at that moment. When he met me, his warm smile makes me cry and homesick. I have handled with so many situations like cruel and plain faces, indifferent and impatient attitude toward to a new comer. Thank you friends! Your smile cheer me up. great picture, shi-fen
The transportation system is built for car. Although different countries in the world keep reminding us to go green, I can't see anything change in America. People fill the gas normally and use plastic bags frequently. In Taiwan, we have to buy plastic bags. People are not willing to spend money on buying plastic bags so that we could reduce plastic bags. ml - good point. I think the mall culture and all the consumerism can explore this idea.
I like taking pictures for labors because they are beautiful. I enjoy seeing their smile and professional attitude to their jobs. They sweater and work hard to get payed. Most construction workers are Mexican and Africa American. In Taiwan, they are from Tailand and Vietnam. Most Taiwanese don't like this kind of job. They prefer to sit in the office. Also, workers' wages from Tailand are cheaper.Exploitation is not only in the heaven of tourist places like Bali but also in the capitalist country.
How happy they are! We could view our lives always in positive way.
! People choose to be homeless or are forced to be homeless. He told me he likes doing recycling. A shopping cart carries all his belongings. Sometimes I wish life could be as simple as this.( continue....) ml - that is a wonderfully different view than I am capable of
! ML-I read the gate as a form of separation and the blurred identity of the man in the foreground as being other. Serendipity. (I think this works extremely well after the sincere man and the mannequins.)
these still exist? i wasn't sure what that was.
i have feelings too
old herron.
she has ear mites nice gaze--more soul than the mannequins
random crap on the steps of old herron i saw some abandoned clothes out and about also... like some pants laying in the parking lot outside varsity lounge. kind of creepy
thats the container in the mall bathroom where you can dispose of your needles i like the comment but i don't think the image reads well. yeah yeah i know
hell yeah i walked that i saw this from the canal level as a giant phallus (long expansion with two orbs at the end), but you have this face working with the caution gate mouth and concrete eyes. i do have penis envy though
meow meow i like it! didn't see it when i was there...
ML - looking down listening to Elliott whisper, "Subway it only goes one way...crushed credit card registered to Smith / not the name that you called me with..." BUT these gates (unlike Shi-Fen's) are open and there are flags in the background (nicely framed). This is a place where people come to look. how did you know which album i listened to? CREEP! you told us on tuesday
im trying to figure out what was in the blank side?
is this beauty? all white mannequins makes a commentary on purity. It's not necessary to be beauty. Good looking is enough.
greek stage
mannequins always have a buddy act like an elegant women. A fake emotion
cover of the new twilight book
column of steel, column of light?
what a great place to get raped and strangled
looks like shes going down the escalator the lighting and dress feel quite festive. a lot of the other mannequins are in cold, sterile lighting. she's going to a cocktail party... she is very cold
deserted cart will become a homeless's belongings
lets guess who put those sticks in the grass.
the products of our consumption
ah, beauty is fleeting. Mastadon is age, dead leaves show time, reflections show vanity and those boots show she is behind by two seasons.
ahhhh ol boy still got one up!
i took this picture because it amazes me that two drugstores are so close together. before they built this cvs here there was one a block away, but they used all of these resources to build a new one so it would be directly across the intersection from walgreens and therefore able to better compete
! ml- this would be nice slide with either a beer ad following it.
I love America and America love me.
! counter ads
i just like the out of shape lady under the "live well" sign like you can buy something and "live well" rather than just living well and not buying anything
Lets play and have fun
the watcher being watched our right is against power
moniter what you do
lets have a feast and forget homeless!!
! very nice framing with the couple holding hands. ml - we should use this shot instead of matt's selling love
! ML -Amanda cut the ad like the mindless mannequins have been reduced selling sex
! penis envy yummy though
! gifts between the women legs (are you serious?). There is no way the designers knew what they were doing. probably needs the step stool cropped out. skinny woman is always the best attraction for selling
what a lovely American style family
Be cool and attractive
* come to me!! Baby! I like you and I want to be with you.
* honey! you want to date with me????
ml - her gaze is creepy yeah and she's skinny as hell so i dont think she has any ASSets to flaunt much much healthier pictures than earlier ones!!
selling joy lonely and sad.
! using twilight to sell clothes? double branding? ml - the androgeny is another quality kind like counterculture
come to see me baby!! I will wait for you.
buy some happiness. buy forever. it's a kind of happiness which will ruin woman's life.
! i just realized i took a picture of the grass underneath the flags without even knowing this was going on above me ml- and you claim you have feelings. If there were a picture of cats, kittens, kitties on those poles you would have noticed. ml - I feel most American when I see the flag. The symbol lets me understand there are other people like me. This is probably why our culture loves the mall and parks and commodities - we want to belong to a group identity. i took this picture, and all of the other pictures of flags, because i became very aware of the fact that i could see a flag from almost anywhere on the canal... and i also noticed that the colors red, white and blue are almost everywhere, advertisements, public sculptures, buildings, etc., which i think could possibly be a good thing to explore. nationalism makes me want to heave ml - i would like to know if Shi-fen feels the same when she sees Taiwan's symbols? I love America and America love me.
i like the point of view of getting better...it speaks to both idealized beauty, commodity based sexuality (I can buy bigger breasts, a consistent erection and a rippled core), and just an American experience of hope and optimism (Shi-fen's smiling man).
